The Aim and Mission of the Department
The aim and the mission of the Department are to establish fundamental understandings of the properties and applications of organic and polymeric materials by performing basic and applied leading edge researches. To educate the most excellent scientists and students in the field of organic and polymeric materials and to develop and provide useful materials for the society are also the important tasks of the Department.
Research Fields
The interests of the Department cover very wide research fields relating to chemistry, physics, and engineering of organic and polymeric materials. Representative objective materials for research are opto-electronic materials, heat-resistant plastics, energy conversion materials, liquid crystals, photosensitive resins, functional composite materials, biomedical materials, and organic superconductors and so on.

International Centre of Macromolecular Science
The international center of macromolecular science (ICMS) is the organization which was launched in April, 2000 and where 62 faculty members are participating from the inside and outside of the department.
The goals of ICMS are as follows.
(1) Establishment of the basic science of giant molecules aimed at understanding the constitution of polymers.
(2) Pioneering a new polymer science by combining biology, chemistry, and physics.
(3) ICMS is to fulfill the role of core of excellence of polymer science in Asia.
These goals are materialized through the promotion of various types of cooperative researches. We need a place where people from all over the world can meet, exchange various information, and have discussions. To have (or construct a system presenting) such a place is also an important goal of ICMS.
