Message from Akihiko Tanioka, professor of Tokyo Institute of Technology, project leader of "Basic Technology for Fiber Materials Having Advanced Functions and New Structures (FY2006-FY2010)"

Nanofibers are consists of nano-sized fibers and nano-structured fibers. Nanofiber technologies, such as nano-level molding, precise surface fabrication, and/or the composite construction of fibrous materials, can lead to discontinuous innovations for the creation of materials with novel functions (e.g., nanosize the effect and supramolecular effect). Since the nanofiber research field contains scientific and technological frontiers, it requires interdisciplinary backgrounds, such as the information technology, electronics, environmental technology, and biological technology.
We understand that the role of the university to promote innovations in nanofibers is very important particularly for developing human resources. In October, 2007, therefore, the Laboratory for Innovation in Nanofibers was founded at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. We look forward to continuously producing exciting new achievements in nanofibers, as the basis of many new innovative technologies.
